Our Story

Surrey Estate Bird Sanctuary is more than just a haven for birds—it’s a historical landmark of Sri Lanka’s conservation legacy. Once the private estate of renowned ornithologist Colonel Goodfellow, our sanctuary has hosted members of the Ceylon Bird Club for decades. Today, we continue this tradition by preserving the forest and promoting birding tourism in the highlands of Welimada.

To protect the biodiversity of our forest, educate visitors on Sri Lanka’s avian richness, and offer a unique, immersive eco-tourism experience to nature lovers and birders around the world.
